Now it's time to explain the word perfect, because our verse says that when we endure trials, they will have their "perfect result" in us. The word perfect here means that we will mature, we will grow, and we will be more like Christ through each trial. We can rejoice in trials because the end result is our growth! If our priorities are ease, comfort, and self-will, we will see our trials as stumbling blocks rather than stepping-stones to maturity. This dear wife decided to try to open her eyes and heart to what God might be doing in moving them to this new place. I met with her several times, and after a few months, she could hardly believe that she had been so unhappy. God had provided great friends, a wonderful church family, great weather, new excursions to the beach and elsewhere with her family, and much more. "But I don't like what He's doing!" she cried to me. I then went on to ask her if she had given Him a chance to show her what He could do in her, for her, and through her if she let go of her selfishness, confessed her sin, and allowed God to work. I asked her to close her fist and picture me trying to give her a lot of money…would she be able to receive it with a closed fist? No, it would fall to the floor. But if she opened her hand, she could receive the gift I was giving to her. I used this to explain to her that her mind was like that closed fist and she couldn't see or receive any of God's blessings until she opened her mind and heart to receive them. God did open her eyes and revealed to her that this misery she was relishing wasn't any fun, and she finally admitted her sin and repented. 3. Read and Pray 5 times a week. I suggest 5 days a week because couples are extremely busy, and sometimes you are going to miss. When you do, you still have Saturday and Sunday to make up for any day you may have missed during the week. It is so easy to become distracted from the things of God. When Mary and I were coordinating the sub-contractors who were building our home, we did not pray or read the Bible together like we should. As one who has fallen into the “too busy” trap, I urge you to not allow anything to distract you from the 555 Marriage Plan! If you follow this plan faithfully, I can guarantee that your marriage will flourish and prosper. It does really come down to this basic truth. Fear the Lord in your marriage and you will be blessed. 2. Read God’s Word together 5 minutes each day. You can start at the beginning of God’s Word and go methodically through it, or you can pick a favorite book of the Bible and read there. It is only important that God’s Word saturate your spirit every day. VIOLATE FEAR If fear suggests something to you, violate it – don’t act in line with it. Don’t listen to it. Don’t yield to it. Don’t think about or believe what fear suggests. When you successfully resist fear in one arena, it may try to attack in another arena, but resist it and stand your ground. Many, however, don’t always recognize the movement of fear, so they don’t always take a stand against it. One woman told me of a time when she was at work and was told by a co-worker that he was leaving the office early to go home because he was sick. When this woman heard that, she thought to herself, “I hope I don’t get sick,” and she started rebuking sickness. But the next day, she got sick. When she related the story to me later, she said she saw where she had missed it. It was fear that suggested to her that she might get sick. She believed what fear suggested and, in fear, started rebuking sick- ness. She opened the door to the devil by believing and acting in line with what fear suggested – instead, she should have rebuked the spirit of fear. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (II Timothy 1:7). God has given us the spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Don’t question your God-given power and authority over the spirit of fear; your authority over fear will work every time as you exercise it. Don’t allow fear to distort your understanding about how God deals with you. God deals with you based on love – not fear. God has no partnership with fear, so rebuke it. God gives you a sound, disciplined, calm and well-balanced mind as you renew it with the Word of God. When the spirit of fear comes, don’t allow it to unsettle your mind from off the Word; keep God’s Word in your thoughts and in your mouth, and fear will be unsuccessful against you. First of all, the meaning of joy is "a state of well-being that comes from trusting God completely." It has nothing to do with our circumstances and everything to do with our relationship with and trust in God. It seems that trials and adversity are God's tools for spiritual growth. If we aren't interested in maturing in Christ, we'll struggle greatly with our trials and circumstances. A woman came to me who was furious with her husband for moving her to California and away from her family in another state. She was so miserable and so mad at her husband that she couldn't see beyond her loneliness and anger. She had heard me speak on accepting what God brings into our lives and using it for His glory, but she was unable to see how it applied to her situation. She was totally blinded by her own perspective…wondering how God could use her when she was lonely, miserable, away from her family, and upset with God. I asked her if she had given her life to the Lord, and she responded that she had. "So when did you take it back?" I asked. She was stunned for a moment and then asked what I meant. "Well, when you give something away, it doesn't belong to you anymore; you have no rights over it. So, since you are claiming all the rights over your life, I'm assuming that you took it back and really didn't mean it when you gave it to the Lord."
