We have just been invited by San Diego Christian Writers Guild to join the faculty for their fall writer’s conference. It will be held in Rancho Bernardo September 24 – 25. We have been involved in this conference twice previously and always find it worthwhile.

We Love to Read

Change a Life

When was the last time you changed someone’s life. What if God used that same story to change many lives?

I have a friend that loves to ask people to tell him their story. I have tried to follow his example and have become amazed at two things; there are many people who have rarely or never been asked to tell their story and most people have remarkable stories to tell!

Let me encourage you to do three things. Tell your story more, ask others to tell you their story, and write these remarkable experiences down in a journal.

You may just change someone’s life including your own.

Social Networking

The days are gone when you could rely on print media and book reviews in magazines to promote your book. With the advent of search engines and social networking marketing has taken on a whole new dimension.

The good news is; most of it is very inexpensive or free! You can create your own You-tube video, have a My-space or Facebook account with your book as the account name, and even have a dedicated web site to promote your book.

Some Cold Facts for Authors

If your potential publisher is promising you the moon, the changes are they are promising what they cannot deliver.Here are the facts.Four years ago, approximately 200,000 book titles were released in a year. That meant that those books were competing for space in the bookstores, which normally stock between 15,000 to 25,000 books. Four years ago the odds of getting into a bookstore were difficult. Today, with the advent of print on Demand, over 800,000 titles are released in a given year. And so, if your potential publisher promises that you will be in bookstores, you should probably run the other way.Another fact - bookstore sales are the least profitable of all sales, yet every author I speak with always asks, "Can you get me in bookstores?" The answer is, "I can make your book available to bookstores, but is that really the first place you want to target?" Most of our authors make most of their money from book sales at conferences and seminars, NOT from bookstore sales.Finally, there is a misconception that once a book is released that the author's job is done. Nothing could be further from the truth. Have you ever noticed that when a movie is released, that the stars hit every talk show on tv and radio, plugging their movie? The same is the case with an author. If you are not willing to help promote your book, then no publisher can help you.Just some serious thoughts for your consideration.

Don't Give Up!

So many authors give up on their books selling within a few months after publication. That makes no sense at all. In my mind, a book is something you keep talking about to anyone who will listen.For example, some books continue to sell for years after they were first popular. Some books "catch on" several months, or even several years, after their publication.So don't give up!If you are an author of a published book, continue to promote it to anyone who will listen.Some of the best-selling authors we have here at CSN were not "instant successes." Instead, it took time for their books to catch on and get ordered.In today's market, where there are thousands of publishing companies, and thousands of bookstores, and thousands of ways to promote your book on the Internet, there is always an avenue that will best fit you as an author.

Buyer Beware

When it comes to publishers , numbers can ben tricky things. For example, they may tell an author that so and so many books have been printed. Well, that is different from how many have been sold.Some companies specialize in Print on Demand , which means they could be printing as little as 10 books of a title. And so, when they say, "150 books published last year," that may not tell you much about their real impact in the publishing industry.Another thing to watch is what I call PACKAGE DEALS that include so many books for a single price. If a publisher quotes you a price without even seeing your book, then be careful. It means they are not going to do much in proofing and editing, and when the final book is published, it could be loaded with errors.
