Foundation Truth # 1: Marriage is a covenant. In verses 23, 24, 25, 27, 29, 30, 32a, comparison is being made between God’s covenant with the Church and the covenant between a husband and wife. What is a covenant? It is an agreement where two parties vow to keep commitments and practices with one another. The Bible is filled with such covenants. God made covenants with Abraham, Moses, Isaac, Noah, David, and the Levites. God gave them “conditional covenants,” meaning He essentially said, “If you do this, I will respond in this manner. If you obey My commands, I will bless you.” Deuteronomy 28 is loaded with conditional covenant promises. One example is Deuteronomy 7:9: Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His loving kindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments.
