Paul’s Pride and the Fall It seems obvious from Scripture that Paul was probably a prideful guy before his conversion. Paul was on an important job, on his way to Damascus, with a letter signed personally by the High Priest, the highest political office in Judaism [both a political and a religious office] [Acts 9]. So, Mr. High-and-Mighty Saul was going to Damascus when God took him off his high horse. God blinded this Pharisee of Pharisees who knew the Pentateuch and the Old Testament prophets backwards and forwards. Paul as a Pharisee had most likely memorized the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. After dealing with the blinded Paul for three days, God sent to him little-known Ananias, a godly man, but with little training compared to Paul. Paul had to humble himself, submit to God’s delegated authority, and receive from this untrained man from Damascus. But he understood that Ananias was the man at that particular time that God was using as His instrument for Paul’s life. That is an excellent picture of how you and I should react to the delegated authority God places in our lives.
