Paul stated, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection…
.” What did he bring his body in subjection to? He brought his
body in subjection to his born again spirit. He kept his body under
the dominion of his own spirit. In other words, he let his spirit rule
him, not his body. Your flesh will still want to do wrong, even though
you’re born again, but you have to keep it under.
As you spend time with God through feeding on His Word and
in prayer, and as you act on that Word in your daily life, your spirit
will be strengthened and developed. As you strengthen and develop
your spirit, then it will be stronger than your flesh and you’ll be able
to keep your flesh under the dominion of your own spirit; you’ll keep
your flesh from dominating your life.

I am reminded of a story about a seven year old boy who came
home from Sunday school and was asked by his mother, “What
did you learn today son?” The boy replied, “Oh, it was really
good! I learned about Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt.
They came to the Red Sea but they could not get across so Moses
called the Israeli Army’s Corps of Engineers and they built a
pontoon bridge. As the Israelites crossed the bridge the Egyptian
Army approached with tanks and heavy artillery. When the
ordnance became stuck in the mud Moses knew this was his
chance. He called the Israeli Air Force, which bombed the
Egyptian Army and wiped them out!” The boy’s mother was
horrified! “Is that what they told you in Sunday school?” she
asked. “Well, not exactly,” the boy replied, “but if I told you
what they really said you would never believe me!”

When I was in seminary I heard the argument almost daily
that Paul’s writings contain his cultural bias, which should be
discarded for modern application. That is simply not true. God
inspired the writing of scripture and every nuance surrounding
its writing was deliberate.
There are some ministers who do not preach sections of the
Word of God because they fear people will leave the church or
that the truth of God’s Word is outdated. Without God’s Word
church becomes nothing more than a form of entertainment.
There is nothing wrong with entertainment but it is no
substitute for the Word of God.

Blessing or Consequence?
O fear the Lord, you His saints; For to those who fear Him
there is no want. (Psalm 34:9]
There is only one thing that brings the blessing of God on
your life: obedience! God loves you, has great plans for you and
deeply desires to bless you. You provide Him with the
opportunity when you choose to fear Him and obey Him. If,
however, you disobey God and pursue your own desires, God’s
desire to bless you does not change...but the degree and delivery
of blessing on your life will definitely change.

PRESENT YOUR BODY TO GOD
You are a three-fold being: you are a spirit, you possess a soul
(made up of your mind, will and emotions), and you live in a body. At
the time you were born again, God did something with your spirit –
He took out that old spirit and nature of death that was in you – He
gave you a new spirit that now has the life and nature of God in it. But
you still have the same mind and the same body you did before you
were born again. Although God gave you a new spirit, the Word says
that you are the one who has to do something with your mind and with
your body.
What are you to do with your body? Paul tells us in Romans 12:1,
“… present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,
which is your reasonable service.” The Amplified Bible reads,
“…which is your…spiritual worship .” You are to present your body
to God to do that which glorifies Him. When you present your body
to God to do that which is right in His sight, that is spiritual worship
– that is one way you worship Him. To present your body to God is
spiritual worship because it is something that you do with your spirit;
with your spirit you present your body to God for His glory.
